Abstract:

This publication is not an exhaustive analysis of public and private sector investments in agricultural R&D; rather, it presents general information that demonstrates the need for public-private sector partnerships, with particular emphasis on developing countries. In order to provide a global contextual framework in which to view the activities of the public and private sectors, the declining off&l development assistance to agriculture as well as public and private sector investments in agricultural R&D are briefly reviewed; for the latter,selected activities of the private sector active in international agricultural R&D are characterized. The need for collaboration between the private and public sectors is discussed and two different initiatives are described that involve collaboration between the public and the private sectors, aimed at building new partnerships for the future.
