Abstract:

Collaborative partnerships have become a custom fundamental to the practice of community psychology (e.g., Kelly, 1988). The involvement of stakeholders in all aspects of the research and evaluation process is expected to increase opportunities for empowerment, (e.g., Bartunek, Foster-Fishman, & Keys, in press) enhance local ownership (e.g., Butterfoss, Goodman, & Wandersman, 1993; Keith, Knox, Perkins, & Blakman, 1995), and improve program effectiveness (e.g., Kelly, 1988). In fact, research and evaluation procedures that exclude community involvement are often criticized as patriarchal and misguided (e.g., Guba & Lincoln, 1989).
