Abstract:

In response to a rapidly changing social and economic environment, innovation has emerged as an important focus for public policy. This paper examines the theme of innovation as it relates to the goal of poverty reduction. It explores ways in which the practice of community-based poverty reduction is responding to the challenges posed by an innovation economy. This is one of a series of papers written in support of the Vibrant Communities initiative. Vibrant Communities is a four-year national effort to explore promising local strategies to reduce poverty. The Tamarack Institute for Community Engagement, the Caledon Institute of Social Policy and the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation are the sponsors of this initiative. Human Resources Development Canada is funding the policy component of the work.
